Several prints stand out among the mix of paintings and graphic works that constitute the show, among them Isabel Bishop's black-and-white etching " Conversation " ( 1931 ), a vignette of two fedora-hatted toughs talking on a street corner; Rockwell Kent's streamlined, Stygian wood engraving with linoleum tint block " Northern Night " ( 1930 ), a mountain-and-river landscape with a large recumbent figure, and Sternberg's own black-and-white etching " Subway Construction " ( 1927 ), an artful meld of brawny men and machinery in a sweaty dig.
